30 Days on the Road in Italy…Day 27: Trapani

Come with us as we explore Italy and check out properties for Gira! Italian Vacation Rentals.

I’d like to recommend November as a great time to visit Sicily. It’s no secret that the island can be quite warm in the summer, but as the winter comes in it becomes very moderate and sunny…a kind of paradise. Today we have a broad blue sky and a view of the sea and coastline from our hotel room.

Our friends have arrived at the Trapani airport and have checked us into a place not far from the sea, with an ancient tower and views from most of the rooms. In one direction, we can see the magical hilltop town of Erice, which seems to live perpetually in the clouds. In the other we see Monte Cofano, which is on the way to San Vito lo Capo.

We get in their car, and the conversation is lively. Before we know it, we are at Segesta, the ancient Greek ruins, and it’s nearly sunset.  It proves to be a beautiful time to visit, as the evening light washes the temple and amphitheater in a warm and radiant light.

That evening, we weave our way up to Erice, and discover a town a that seems to live in the sky, beautiful and welcoming. We meander along the winding stone streets and stop in a bar to sample the local aperitivo. It’s a wonderful moment.

As with our other dates in Sicily, it’s all so brief, tantalizing, begging for a return.

Tomorrow:  San Vito lo Capo
