30 Days on the Road in Italy…Day 26: Agrigento

Come with us as we explore Italy and check out properties for Gira! Italian Vacation Rentals.

Continuing on our mission to circumnavigate the island of Sicily, today we reach Agrigento and explore the area. We drive into the town center, and after a few wrong turns, find our way to Via Atenea, the historic shopping street which is blocked to traffic during the peak shopping hours.  We’re allowed a temporary parking spot and quickly check into our B&B. It turns out to be a delightful family-run place with just a couple of rooms, just off the shopping area in a quiet alcove. As with so many accommodations in Italy, the owners are absolutely delightful and helpful.

The owner takes us to her favorite place to park, and in a few minutes we are back on Via Atenea, which is alive and vibrant with the people of Agrigento, just off work and on their way home. We stop into a charming little shop and buy a scarf.

On the owner’s recommendation, we make our way to the Osteria ex Panificio, on the Piazza Giuseppe Sinatra for a delicious meal of pasta with fish.

In the morning, we visit the awe inspiring Valley of the Temples.  A small crowd has gathered close to the Temple of Concordia to watch a fashion shoot in progress.  We’re drawn in.  Concordia proves to be the gem of the collection, the most intact and colorful of them all.

We’ve had so little time in Agrigento, but mark it in our memories as a place to return again some day and look more deeply!

Tomorrow:  Trapani
